Vindicate me, Lord,
for I have led a blameless life;
I have trusted in the Lord
and have not faltered
.

David is pleading here for the Lord’s intervention in his earthly struggles. Yet he is not seeking protection from his enemy or victory in battle. All David asks for is vindication, he wants to simply be shown to be right and justified. And while his assertion of blamelessness is bold, we understand by the rest of the verse that David is trusting not in his own blamelessness, but in his sincere pursuit of God. For David knows that it is only by trusting in the Lord, and not in his own merits, that He can be vindicated.

So too, when we find ourselves criticized or scorned by others for doing right and following God’s leading, must we put our trust in Him. Vindication may not come as quickly or as clearly as we would like, but the more we trust in God to guide us, the more He will make our way blameless.
