Abraham and Sarah were very old when Isaac was born, and Sarah declared “God has brought me laughter” (Genesis 21:6). Even Isaac’s name means ‘He laughs’. Every time Abraham and Sarah said Isaac’s name, they were reminded of the laughter given to them by God. Every time others encountered Isaac, they shared in that joyous laughter.
In what ways has God given you laughter? Improbable victories over difficult circumstances cause us to celebrate with laughter. We laugh daily at the surprising and comical actions of our children and pets. We enjoy shared humor with our spouses as we reminisce over a lifetime of memorable moments.
As we reflect on these joyous memories, let us thank God for the people and events in our life that make our laughter possible. And let us thank Him for the gift of laughter itself, for the capacity to express our joy so fully and freely.
