The Bible is filled with stories that can be used to recall how wonderful God is. From Genesis to Revelation, the Bible has many lessons parents can use to help teach their children about God and how He wants them to live their lives with Him close to their hearts. The story of David and Goliath is a perfect example of a story that every Christian child should know.
In the Old Testament; Book Of 1 Samuel, Chapters 16 and 17, it describes King David, a man after the heart of God. In the story, he famously slew the giant Goliath when he was just a mere shepherd boy.
In the eyes of God, King Saul sinned and after being displeased with him as king. God commanded the prophet Samuel to replace King Saul. Samuel was led to the home of Jesse who hailed from the tribe of Benjamin.
Samuel was presented to seven of the eight sons that Jesse had. Samuel thought that God would surely be pleased if he picked one of the sons, given that they were strong. The Lord instead told Samuel not to judge based on appearance alone, and that instead, it was crucial to look at their heart. Samuel heard word of the youngest son, David, who was a small shepherd boy.
A giant by the name of Goliath would challenge anyone in the land to defeat him in battle, yet no one was brave enough to challenge him. David heard of the challenge during the war between the Israelites and Philistines and told King Saul that he would fight the giant.
David wasn’t a warrior and King Saul was worried, so he gave him his royal armor, but David asked that the armor wouldn’t be necessary, as he was not going to use it. Instead, dressed in plain shepherd’s clothing, his only weapon would be his slingshot.
David slung a stone and shot the giant. The stone went into Goliath’s head and killed him instantly. The Israeli army cut off the fleeing Philistines who were trying to flee and were defeated.
The moral of the story is that in God's eyes, it is not about the appearance of a person, but what's inside their heart that matters.
