One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple.

As an expression of God’s beauty and David’s desire to know Him, this verse paints a grand picture. But when we contemplate David’s situation as he penned these words, we discover even more profound meaning.

In the surrounding verses, David speaks of evil men seeking to devour him, armies besieging him, and war breaking out against him. Yet, despite these threats, David still looks to the house of the Lord, his sanctuary and stronghold. But not just until the trouble passes. Rather, David sees that God’s dwelling place is an eternal hope, a strength that can outlast any trouble.

We are both challenged and encouraged by these words. Challenged to look past our own troubles and focus on the Lord, not just with a desperate cry, but with confident hope. And we are encouraged, having the assurance that God hears our prayers and provides lasting shelter in the storms of life.
