Faith And The Stages Of Grief

What Scripture Says About Grief

Stages of grief go back to the beginning of time. Grief is so normal that even Jesus mourned. John the Baptist was beheaded and, as it is said in Matthew 14:13, Jesus got on a boat and went to a desolate place. He was so overwhelmed by grief He had to get away to spend time praying and thinking.

Taking the time out to think and pray to remember what we have lost is all part of the grieving process.

Tell God Your Feelings

“Why, my soul, are you so downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.” - Psalm 42:5

In Psalms, David is encouraged to look for hope in God and in order to do this he must open himself up and share his feelings. Drenching his pillow with tears, long nights where his soul cries out and the feeling of no strength left within himself to continue, the grieving heart must be vulnerable at first in order to hear God.

Allow Others Support You

It’s totally normal to feel like others don’t understand what you’re dealing with. And you’re right. Grief is isolating and each person goes through different and unique situations. The cut is deep and each grief takes on a different shape. But finding the right people around you to help talk about your pain is crucial to getting help. A therapist, Christian counselor, or pastor can help you explore your feelings of grief in a safe environment.

Remember, You Are Not Home Yet

“He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death, or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” - Revelation 21:14

Remember that if you’re experiencing loss, one day you’ll be reunited for eternity. If you’ve missed out on a dream or opportunity and you’re grasping for reasons to understand why. You will know, one day, as is God’s plan.
